Ahead of tomorrow’s opposition protest, WOLA has put out a statement urging the Venezuelan government to respect the rights of its citizens to participate in peaceful assembly tomorrow, as well as to ensure their safety. WOLA also highlights recent reports that police have detained or arrested a number of opposition figures.

“Rather than promoting peaceful dialogue, the government appears to have chosen to pave the way for deeper confrontation by intimidating and harassing opposition figures,” says WOLA Executive Director Joy Olson. “At a time when the overwhelming majority of Venezuelans want solutions, this hostility is both unjust and counterproductive.”
