Speaking with Radio France Internationale (RFI), David Smilde offered his take on Donald Trump’s September 19 speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which the U.S. president said he was “prepared to take further action” in response to Venezuela’s crisis. As Smilde noted, Trump’s hostile rhetoric risks threatening multilateral efforts and provides Nicolas Maduro with a useful scapegoat.
